Guidance for colleges

Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND)

Government Guidance

The SEND code of practice 0-25 years is the statutory guidance for organisations who work with and support children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

There is also a SEND: guide for further education providers on the support system for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. This guide is for:

  • further education colleges
  • sixth-form colleges
  • 16 to 19 academies
  • independent specialist colleges

It explains the duties and responsibilities of further education providers who deal with children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and their families.

How school and college funding works

All mainstream schools are provided with resources to support those with additional needs. This includes pupils/students with Special Educational Needs and who are Disabled (SEND). The amount of resources they receive is calculated by a local funding formula. The formula is discussed with our local funding forum and it also applies to local academies.
