Trafford Sensory Impairment Support Service (TSISS)

The service consists of specialist teachers for deaf/hearing impaired children, specialist teachers for blind/visually impaired children, specialist support assistants, technical support and an Orientation and Mobility Officer.

The team provide educational support to children and young people aged 0-19 in the full range of schools and settings (including home for preschool children).

The focus is on teaching and learning / enabling curriculum access as this in an educational service. There is a strong emphasis on capacity building for families, settings and schools to enhance their ability to meet the needs of children and young people who have a sensory impairment. Families are supported from the time of diagnosis which for Hearing Impairment can be within days of birth following neonatal screening.

There is  a children's Orientation and Mobility Service provided for children with visual impairment by a qualified and expereinced Orientation and Mobility Officer.

Children who have sensory impairments are assessed by the service for a wide range of auxillary aids and equipment to enable them to access education - where these are for use in educational settings they are purchased and provided by the Sensory Impairment Support Service on a loan basis.

Worthy of a gold medal
We think that Trafford Sensory Impairment Support Service is worthy of a gold medal. As a family they have supported us and our daughter through the last 18 years, both good and not quite so good times and celebrated with us at the end of our journey with them. Leaving on a great high with our daughter gaining 4 A levels - 2A*, 1A and 1B and a confirmed place at the uni of her choice. Our daughter is blind and relies on Braille as her written and read medium, so well done to the team in supporting her through all her education. We can't praise them enough and Trafford should celebrate the service successes
Excellent Service
An enthusiastic, specialist, professional, service that support vulnerable children with sensory impairments (and their parents) throughout Trafford. They are always happy to help with advice and you can depend on them to answer your questions immediately, or find answers to your questions when needed. They treat the children they support with the dignity and respect they deserve and ensure their inclusion in their chosen school setting. Long may they carry on!
