Social Communication Difficulties Specialist Class
Wellfield Infant School has a Small Specialist Class (SSC) which specialises in social communication. The class is for reception / key stage 1. There are 8 pupils in the class with one teacher and one teaching assistant. All pupils have an EHC plan for social communication or autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) type difficulties or allied conditions.
Small Specialist Classes (SSC) in Trafford schools were created to ensure pupil's additional needs were met within a mainstream school. Staff are experienced and trained in the particular specialism of the class as well as general special and additional needs.
Pupils from the SSC often spend time in the bigger classes in the school when they show themselve able to cope with the social and educational demands of the mainstream class in particular areas of the curriculum.
Pupils from the SSCs are fully integrated into the general life of the school.

- Referral Details
Referral to this class is through the local authority. The complexity of some children’s needs may mean their needs are best met within a specialist setting such as a small specialist class. This will be discussed with parents as part of an Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment or as part of an annual review of an EHC plan.
