St Ambrose College

Secondary Academy     1050 capacity

St. Ambrose College is a Christian Brothers' Roman Catholic boys' grammar school and sixth form with a selective intake, boys entering via a competitive entrance examination. Most of them are, therefore, quite able, highly motivated, and supported by parents with high aspirations for their sons.

Consequently our teachers are  well-qualified to teach their subject and are capable of teaching confidently up to 'A' level. High standards of discipline are expected and the boys require stimulating and challenging teaching to achieve their maximum potential. The College has an impressive site in extensive parklands. It is well-equipped in most areas and generously resourced. Facilities include an indoor heated swimming pool, purpose built Technology / ICT block, multimedia language laboratory, a music suite, and a well-stocked library . The school is rich in extra-curricular activities. The main games are rugby, cricket and cross-country, but there are many others. Drama is strong with a major production each year as well as other events. Boys are actively involved in the liturgical life of the school; we are creating a Chaplaincy Team to develop the Catholic Spirituality through liturgical celebration.

Music, too, is strong with a fine choir. It has sung in Chester, Norwich and Worcester Cathedrals and York Minster. A definite and specific extra-curricular commitment is required from all applicants and applicants should include a clear commitment to help with a sporting or other extracurricular activity. We have Parent-Teacher evenings for each year as well as Open Mornings/Evenings for the Main School and the Sixth Form entrants.

There are more than 950 boys on the school roll, including about 200 in the Sixth Form. Most proceed to University, a number to Oxbridge. There is a teaching staff of some 50.

All that is best in the Christian Brothers' tradition is preserved. St.Ambrose is, therefore, first and foremost, a Catholic School with a Catholic ethos that exists in our daily life.
