The HUB : Small Specialist Class at Lostock High School

This is a small nurturing specialist class for young people aged 11-16 years with an Education, Health and Care Plan based in Lostock High School a small secondary school.

It is designed for pupils with Autism or social communication needs without other significant learning difficulties but for whom the environment of a large mainstream secondary school is a major barrier and causing significant anxiety.

The class is known as the HUB (Here ‘U’ belong) and pupils can spend as much time as needed within the class situation.

The specialist team includes:

  • Educational Psychologist consultancy.
  • Children and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) / Healthy Young Minds
  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Sensory Occupational Therapy
  • Autism/social communication Consultant
  • All of the above includes assessment where needed and discussion with parents and attendance at reviews where required.

The provision was new in September 2018 and the design was influenced by parent and young people’s comments on visits in the summer of 2018.

Parent and young person voice continues to be key to making this provision work for each young person and provision is planned to meet individual need.

“I was feeling anxious about the transition from primary to secondary school and so was my son who is autistic. He currently attends a mainstream primary school in Sale and we were recommended to consider The Hub at Lostock High School.

This is a small specialist class for children and young people with autism or social communication needs who would find going to a large mainstream secondary school really challenging.

We visited the school and instantly loved everything about the provision, the staff were so friendly and helpful, it was amazing to feel welcomed. My son has been for a taster day and has already made a new friend so we are both now feeling confident about the transition and looking forward to September.”
