Complex Learning Difficulties and Language Disorder Specialist Class

Barton Clough Primary School has 2 Small Specialist Classes (SSC) which specialise in complex learning difficulties. There is one class for reception / Key Stage 1 (infant) and one class for Key Stage 2 (junior). There are 10 pupils in each class and all pupils admitted have an EHC plan for complex learning difficulties.

Small Specialist Classes (SSC) in Trafford schools were created to ensure pupil's additional needs were met within a mainstream school. Staff are experienced and trained in the particular specialism of the class as well as general special and additional needs.

Pupils from the SSC often spend time in the bigger classes in the school when they show themselve able to cope with the social and educational demands of the mainstream class in particular areas of the curriculum.

Pupils from the SSCs are fully integrated into the general life of the school.

Referral Details

Referral to this class is through the local authority. The complexity of some children’s needs may mean their needs are best met within a specialist setting such as a small specialist class. This will be discussed with parents as part of an Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment or as part of an annual review of an EHC plan.
