Specialised Ability Centre
The Specialised Ability Centre provides some of the most advanced care in the country to patients requiring replacement limbs and rehabilitation across Greater Manchester and East Cheshire, as well as wheelchair and special seating services. We provide assessment and support to people of all ages following congenital and acquired limb loss.
Our new facility has been created in partnership with the prosthetic limb company Opcare. We are now one of the largest specialist prosthetic physiotherapy departments in the UK, with spacious medical, nursing and prosthetic assessment rooms, an occupational therapy department, and a counsellor’s room. We also have a paediatric assessment room with toys and a play area for treating younger patients with their carers.
Our fully-equipped computer aided design facility gives our clinicians the latest technology for optimal fitting of limbs as well as advanced equipment to analyse patients ‘gait’ or walking technique, using force pads and cameras.
We have a first-floor terrace with an outdoor multi-purpose test track for amputees learning to walk on a range of different surfaces that is aimed at military amputees, although the facility is for the benefit of any patient gaining confidence with their mobility.
