The AERPS is a Registered Charity (No. 1093098). The Society’s objective is: “The Society exists to advance the education of the public in particular by the preservation and exhibition of rolling stock, artefacts, relics and other such documents relating to the Manchester South Junction and Altrincham (MSJ&A) line and elsewhere, which are of historic or scientific importance.”
The AERPS owns two 1931 "Altrincham Electric" ex-MSJ&AR coaches (Nos 117 and 121) based at the Midland Railway - Butterley near Ripley in Derbyshire and is a corporate member of the Midland Railway Trust. It is also a member of the Heritage Railway Association. The AERPS also organises a Winter Lecture Series in Altrincham (second Friday in month Ocotober to April), coach trips, and Summer and Christmas socials. The Society publishes its own magazine LIVE WIRES.
