Coronavirus update - October 2020:
The Children’s Therapy Service is open to all referrals excepting Sensory Pathway assessment.
Due staffing vacancies the service has a limited Occupational Therapy offer. It expected that these vacancies will be filled by the end of this year.
Sensory service. There remains a long waiting list. This has been prioritised and is under constant review for managing urgent need for assessment with the limited capacity that we do have at this time. The service is being risk managed and all commissioning parties are aware of the situation.
Waiting times for other areas of OT such as pre-school and motor skills are also high however a plan is in place with clinics being booked and other aspect with minimal waits being held to help reduce these waiting times.
Physiotherapy – Our Musculoskeletal service (MSK) has embraced the use of virtual tools to support assessment and exercise management, with some patients requiring hands on assessment coming in to clinic. The waiting times have gone down from 40+ weeks during lockdown to 4 weeks, following the opening of the service in July.
All other areas of physiotherapy are below a 12 week wait and this continues to reduce.
Due to limited clinic space and reduced appointments to ensure cleaning between patients we are continuing to complete video or telephone consultations as well as, home and school visits where appropriate for children and families of all ages and will endeavour to provide a service in the most appropriate manner and setting
We are working within our recommended guidance with regards to social distancing and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) for visits and clinic appointments to continue to protect our patients, families and staff.
When attending any outpatient clinics you will be asked to wear a face covering and where possible only one parent/carer to attend the appointment.
Patients/families can continue to phone the service for advice and support or access information via our website links below. We also now have a newly developed Facebook page which we aim to post relevant therapy activities and useful information.

Sensory Assessment Service
Please read the letter on, the strategic lead for Complex Needs on 5 August 2020. This was sent to SENCOs and shared by Trafford Parents Forum to parent carers.
It describes the challenge in meeting the demand for paediatric sensory assessment and the approved interim plan with the commissioners at this time.
About our service
This is a joint team comprising of children's physiotherapy and occupational therapy services which provides high quality holistic therapy assessments, treatments, advice and packages of care to babies, children and young people with disabilities, developmental and acquired movement and / or coordination problems. This team also provides assessment on behalf of social services for equipment and adaptations.
Specialist Occupational Therapists from Trafford Children’s Therapy department have worked together to develop a range of leaflets for strategies to support children with functional difficulties such as toileting, ball skills, handwriting, doing/undoing buttons, using cutlery etc. to develop their skills. These strategies can be used by parents, preschool and school staff.
Packages of care are designed according to assessed need, to improve function in daily activities and encouraging children and young people to achieve their maximum potential whilst maintaining health and wellbeing. The service was voted by colleagues as a winner of the 2015 Principles of Care Awards.
The service operates in a time limited intervention manner in order to provide a fair service to all children and keep waiting times for assessment and treatment to a minimum.
