About Sense

Sense is a disability charity working to make sure no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, is left out of life or is unable to reach their potential. Through years of experience, Sense have developed an unrivalled depth of knowledge, skill and expertise to unlock the barriers to communication.

Sense’s journey began more than 65 years ago, born from a connection made between two parents in 1955 after contracting rubella and giving birth to babies who were deafblind. Worried that their children would be isolated and unable to enjoy meaningful, fulfilled lives, they formed connections with families in similar situations and started to break down barriers that stopped their children being able to communicate and experience the world. They discovered that there are many different ways of communicating and connecting than people realise. Sense began, and continues, to support people who are deafblind however over the years it became apparent that our expertise, which stems from this specialism in deafblindness, would benefit many more people.

Our expertise is in supporting individuals with communication needs benefits people of all ages, as well as their families and carers.
