What is a childminder?
A childminder is a person who works with children for more than 2 hours a day in their own home for reward. Childminders offer professional home childcare and early education, looking after small groups of children of different ages from different families.
How do I become a childminder?
There are 2 routes to becoming a childminder, you can either register independently with Ofsted or join a childminding agency.
More information can be found here about the registration process with Ofsted and local childminding agencies:

Training
Childminders who wish to offer childcare for children aged 0-5 must have completed training which helps them to understand and implement the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
If you are an experienced/qualified childcare practitioner, you may opt for a refresher course on the EYFS/Safeguarding and to update your paediatric first aid prior to registration.
If you have no qualifications or experience, both Salford and Stockport local authorities offer pre-registration training.

To become a registered childminder, you'll need to complete a pre-registration training course. You'll also need to have a current paediatric first aid certificate. You will need a copy of the EYFS Statutory Framework which can be downloaded from the Foundation Years website.
You will be required to complete a DBS check for yourself and anyone who lives or works in your home aged 16 or over. You will be self-employed and responsible for running your own business and obtaining the correct insurance. HMRC offer online business advice for childminders.
If you already hold a childcare qualification and can demonstrate that you can meet the requirements of the EYFS Statutory Framework 2023, you may not need to complete a pre-registration training course. For further information please get in touch and ask to speak to a Childcare Advisor.
