Children and Young People Weight Management Service

We offer a six month programme with a dietitian to support children, young people and their families to make healthy lifestyles changes to - 

  • improve health and fitness
  • feel good
  • become a healthier weight.

The programme can include a range of interactive sessions based on what's important for you and your family, including

  • family meals
  • moving more
  • creating a regular eating plan
  • portion sizes
  • understanding food labels 
  • healthy snack ideas
  • mindful eating

Each family is different and we support you to make your own goals and we can share what has worked for other families.

What will the programme involve?

  • the programme will entail regular appointments for up to six months, run in a relaxed and friendly way
  • appointments usually last for 40 minutes and can be by telephone, video call or face to face in clinic.

What will be expected of you?

  • it is important that you and your family make time for the programme
  • it helps to make the changes as a family
  • you will need to work on agreed changes between appointments and be open and honest about progress
  • please attend your appointments. Families may lose their place on the programme if they do not attend without letting us know.

Eligibility Details

Trafford resident

Overweight (> 98th BMI centile), if you are not sure how overweight your child is please contact you school nurse (school age children) or health visitor (pre-school age) to discuss the services available for you.

Interpreters can be arranged if needed and the Service is able to make adjustments to help support children and young people with complex needs.

Families can self refer to the service by contacting the team on 0161 549 6120, we will then arrange an initial appointment to discuss your child and the programme. If it is agreed that the programme is right for you and your family, you will be asked to join. If the programme if not right for you, we will discuss other sources of support for weight management.

Health staff can also refer children and their families using the referral form attached.
