Venture Arts Young People's Art Club (Children and Young People Short Breaks)

Venture Arts logo

Venture Arts young people’s art club is a specialised visual arts club for learning disabled people aged 8 to 25.  Although based in Hulme, Manchester, we welcome people from across Greater Manchester.

We run innovative, fun and person centred art programmes which take place on a Saturday morning and Wednesday afterschool each week. All of our programmes are run by permanent members of staff who are all professional practicing artists with at least 5 years experience of working with learning disabled people.  Each group has no more than 10 young people, with at least 3 members of staff and a great team of volunteers to help in each workshop.

Each programme is 12 weeks long, in either photography (digital or film using our darkroom), ceramics, 3D, animation and illustration, textiles and much more.  All are designed by our art tutors with each programme teaching a new skill, being mindful of all learners needs and interests and aiming to aid each individual to make a high quality, exhibition standard piece of artwork.

Each project results in an individual or collaborative piece of artwork and at least once a year we exhibit all of the artwork at a high profile gallery. Our exhibitions are always popular and are a great chance for our young artists to show off their talents and build confidence.

We are open throughout the summer and only close for 2 weeks at Easter and 2 weeks at Christmas, giving continuity throughout summer holidays.

Our young artists can also expect other opportunities, such as taking part in Manchester Day, being involved in our local festival, 'Hulme Is Where The Art Is' and other community events.  Some of our young people have also gone on to take part in our Cultural Enrichment Programme, where they have been supported by us to complete work experience programmes at a museum or gallery in Manchester and others have assisted one of our art tutors in a primary or SEN school, passing on skills that they have learnt at Venture Arts and being paid for their time. Some of our young artists have also had their artwork entered into external exhibitions and competitions, with one of our young artists winning the Create Art for Autism animation award last year and having his artwork exhibited in an international exhibition of learning disabled artists work at Project Ability in Glasgow.

Here's what one of our young people said about Venture Arts young people's club.

"It’s great fun – you will learn lots, make some fantastic art and get your work shown in big exhibitions" David, who has been attending our art club for 5 years.

Notes

We are located next to the new Manchester Metropolitan university building on Old Birley Street in the Work for Change building.  On the other side of us is Kim By The Sea cafe and across the road is Hulme community garden centre.

Bus routes:

From Manchester city centre, the number 86 bus stops approximately 50 metres away from Venture Arts (just before Asda in Hulme).

From Chorlton, Whalley Range or Old Trafford, the number 86 bus stops just outside Hulme community garden centre. From there you would need to cross the road, where you would see Kim By the Sea cafe and Venture Arts next door.

From Trafford, bus numbers 250, 256 and 263 all stop on Stretford Road just opposite the new Co op food, where you would cross over and walk through the new university gardens or walk straight down Old Birley Street to find Venture Arts.

Eligibility Details

Venture Arts young people's art club is for people aged 8 to 25, who have a learning disability and or are on the autistic spectrum. We ask that everyone who comes to Venture Arts has a keen interest in art and remind them that visual art workshops are all we do.  We also stress that no experience is necessary, we do not test people on their ability.

During their initial visit, parents or careers will be required to fill in a small amount of paperwork, including a behavioural risk assessment.  On a very rare occasion these will show up with challenging behaviour which may put others at risk.  If this does happen, actions may be put in place for that person to try sessions and be supported on a one to one basis with a member of his or her support team. On some occasions, for the safety of others in the group, a young person may not be able to take part in the sessions due to challenging behaviours and will not be offered a place at Venture Arts.

Please also note, we do not usually provide personal care and so service users who require personal care support may be required to bring their own support with them.

Referral Details

Referals are not necessary and parents/ careers or young people themselves can contact Katherine by calling the phone numbers or emailing the email address provided.  From there we would invite the young person and their parent or career to come and have a look around the studio when a session is happening.  Then we would discuss the young persons interests, what they would like to learn at Venture Arts and look at placing them in an appropriate class.
