Being There - Life Limiting Illness Support
Being There is a local charity providing emotional support and home-based practical help to people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, along with those closest to them, such as family, friends and carers. Being There works in the Greater Manchester area. Our services are delivered by specially trained volunteers who are managed by a team of professional staff.
Should you wish to access these services or have service users who would benefit from using these services, please do refer to us and we will arrange an initial assessment.
We currently offer the below services:
Home Support/Befriending
An opportunity to be matched with one of our trained volunteers, who will visit you in your home once a week or once a fortnight for social conversation, emotional support and signposting. Our befrienders can also take befriendees on trips out to local parks or venues. All our volunteers are DBS-checked and trained in empathic listening. We currently have a waiting list for this service.
Telephone Befriending
An opportunity to be matched with one of our trained volunteers, who will call once or twice a week for social conversation, emotional support and signposting. All our volunteers are DBS-checked and trained in empathic listening.
Social Group
Fortnightly on Tuesdays from 14:00-16:00
Our social group takes place at the Salvation Army Hall in Sale and provides a safe space for those affected by life limiting illnesses to come together to support one another and take part in a variety of activities. A range of activities are on offer, such as quizzes and games, ‘preparing for winter’, guest speakers from organisations around Greater Manchester, social chat and much more.
Counselling Service
Our Counselling Service launched in October 2019 and was initially only available to registered clients. We have now opened our Counselling Service to external referrals from health professionals. Person-centred counselling is available for a period of 8 1-hour sessions with a qualified or student counsellor.
Transport to hospital/medical appointments
Our volunteer drivers offer transport to and from hospital appointments, medical appointments (such as the GP), or medical-related appointments (such as support groups for those with life limiting illnesses). Volunteers can also accompany clients into their appointments if desired.
